Hi,

Weighing pros and cons, I would not buy the wagon.

Having been the owner of several Japanese cars, which reach 200K miles with scarcely more than oil changes and brake jobs, owning my 2000 SAAB wagon has been a shock.

Seemingly at every turn, some sensor or other electronic part that I didn't even know existed has failed and has ended up costing me hundreds of dollars. ABS module failure (SAAB wanted $2500 for the part!), IDM failure, reverse gear sensor problems, blown SID. And that's just what I can remember off the top of my head.

While it's true that all near luxury/luxury cars are coming loaded with expensive electronics, I haven't had a single problem with a Lexus I own, which albeit younger by several years, is approaching the same mileage as my SAAB.

Further, as I think about it, the car has had it's share of mechanical related problems, too. A leaking "second oil filter plug" (what kind of engineer thought of having two oil filter plugs?), leaking coolant at the turbo, a bad tensioner pulley, etc.

Possibly the car's a lemon, but judging by the items posted on this BBS, I tend to think it's more the norm than the outlier.

On the plus side, the car rides nicely, I perceive it to be safe, it's roomy, and has good power. Another bonus is this BBS which has knowledgeable, helpful folks reading it.

Having said all that, it sounds as if you already own a SAAB. So, if you're happy with your car, I don't imagine a wagon model would be any more problematic than the sedan. In addition, I'm guessing that Volvos share many of the same electrical components, made by Robert Bosch, with SAABs. If that's the case, then Volvos and SAABs probably have many of the same issues.

Good luck with whichever car you end up purchasing.
Tony
