Years ago we had a Passat TDI and I was using Mobil 1 5w40 TDT. I then started using that in Saabs and felt that the engine was smoother and ran better.
Oil recommendations are not for optimal ending life, but also for fleet MPG ratings, less cost for "free oil change maintenance plans", emissions, cat convert life expectancy.
Reduced wear metals in UOA is really the goal, less engine wear. The problem with wear metals is that they are too small for the filters to remove, wear metals create more wear and that does self amplify. A high strength drain plug magnet does remove some of the magnetic wear metals. Some will install bypass filters that are very effective, but these are hard to install and involve a lot of added hoses etc. Some install centrifuge oil cleaners, which are expensive and difficult to install. Some attach magnets to the oil filters. I am tempted to place rare earth magnets to the filter mounting plate so there are directly in the oil flow.
