All of the Mobil 1 oils use Group IV (PAO) as their primary base stock.
ALL of them.
Unfortunately, PAOs don't solubilize additives very well, so a separate amount of another base oil Group must be combined with the primary base stock to keep the additives dissolved in the oil.
Mobil originally used esters (Group V) as the solubilizing agent. Of course, esters are a more expensive choice. In order to keep profits up, a couple of years ago Mobil started using Group III oil in place of esters.
0W-40 might still use esters to maintain cold flow & cold pumpability, the areas where Group III oils fall short. I don't know. And I wouldn't be surprised if 5W-40 continued to use esters, since it costs 20% more than Mobil 1's other oils. But again, I don't know for sure.
