Look closely at the stop arm the motor shaft plugs into. The stutter sounds like it might be a crack in the part that goes around the shaft that is preventing the shaft from stopping rotating when it meets resistance and signaling the motor to stop.
Alternatively it could be the gear on the motor spindle slipping inside the gear box. See the link below.
I haven’t heard of motors failing outright very much. It’s usually the plastic parts they are driving.
