In case someone runs into similar problems to fix...
Getting the wipers off. This is a northern car that has gone at least 250k km and 10+ years without removing them. I got them off with the lisle tool but only barely. I needed to use vice grips on the flimsy handle. I almost bought another tool, and the first couple reviews for it on Amazon were from Saab 9-5 owners who couldn't get the wipers off any other way. The tool is: otc 6676 and you can crank it with a socket or a wrench. More expensive but probably worth it imho.
Replacing the cowl rubber "seal" (it's not actually a seal). Others have suggested z molding (thanks!). I used Yosoo "Car Weather Stripping, 4M Car Door Edge Guards Z Shape Adhesive Car" off Amazon and it was enough to do 2 cars (which is great because both of mine need it). So far it works great installs well, looks good, very similar to the original imho.
The filter material in the cowl drains above the fenders were a rotting mess. Not sure what to replace them with. I may just fit some window screen material, but I'm not sure if it needs the thickness?
