With the "hexapus" (6 legged octopus) now used for starting the car by bypassing the ignition switch, I have engaged in a few days of driving and leaving it in hot parking lots after a drive.
Day 1 went fine, I was getting some confidence back.
Day 2 (yesterday), and I was stranded again. When hotwiring to start, familiar "lights out on dash", no engagement of starter (but a "clunk" from it). This time I had my voltmeter with me: battery was at 12.25V, when a helper attempts to hotwire the starter, it dropped to 11.9V!
I was watching the voltage on the battery the last few days (after adding the "hexapus"). On day 1, before starting, the battery was at 12.6V. After 1 day (start of run on day 2), it was at 12.35V. Then when stranded, again was at 12.25V.
I was able to "clutch start" (was smart enough to be on a hill this time :-) and get it home. In the cool of the garage in the morning the battery is showing 12.58V.
So, in the "cool" the battery seems to recover, but in the "heat" it is low, very low and thus won't engage the starter.
The battery itself is fairly new cheap walmart battery. BUT I am back to suspecting that my alternator (esp. when "hot") isn't delivering correctly, even though I see no indication of a battery light in the dash (yes it does light up when key on).
I DID replace the voltage regulator about 6 months ago, they were definitely worn, but new one in place still leaving me stranded.
I see in Bentley is says if the battery light is the wrong wattage it won't charge the battery correctly at idle. Huh? surprising but I guess makes sense.
Anyway, I have a replacement bosch alternator here from Eeuro, I feel like putting it in just to find out if things are solved. It SEEMS like the last remaining variable (to the best of my ability the wiring all seems "solid" regarding ground connection, etc. (I did run a dedicated ground to the alternator some time back as well since the one going to the block seems suspect).
More ideas? I guess time to get out that dreaded "lower alternator bolt"? I do see the writeup on townsend to get the lower alt bracket out. Doesn't sound too fun. Who puts engines in backward anyway??? But I LOVE this car so willing to suffer through quirks :-)
