Success, but not sure exactly WHY? - UPDATE Posted by iveand [Email] (#3155) [Profile/Gallery] (more from iveand) on Wed, 17 Aug 2022 13:50:20 In Reply to: Re: No start again ... Sorry didn't see this before I had the alternator put back in, but would have been wise to put that bottom bolt in backward as you suggested.
Anyway, when I had the old alternator out I am suspect of the installation of the replacement voltage regulator I had put in.... one of the brushes seems a bit bent, maybe it wasn't seated correctly? Another "suspect" item is the spring tension clip that the VR sits on, it was pretty cruddy so I don't think was making good contact. Could this have been part of the issue?
Regardless, with new alternator in, the problem seems SOLVED! Except it is now a bit strange that the battery light doesn't go out for many seconds when starting (or until slight rev of the engine). Before, as soon as the car started the battery light INSTANTLY went out, which is why this was so strange. Maybe I had some sort of "short circuit" or something? Or?? Again with maybe the VR not seated well, would the battery light prematurely post "good" even though no actual charging was taking place?
Now I get strong battery voltage levels after each drive (after turning off car, battery is at 13V and will settle down to 12.75V or so over night), even if I take a long run with ALL the accessories on I have access to (lights, fog lights, rear defroster), it still has strong voltage at the end of a run.
So my remaining questions to help understand *why* a new alternator solved the problem are:
* is the "battery light goes out instantly" when using the bad alternator understandable?
* is the "battery light takes a while to go out" with the good new alternator understandable?
* was is just the mounting / installation of the replacement VR in the old alternator that was the problem?
In addition, minor annoyance but after tinkering around I must have bumped something and my oil pressure light now does not show up when turning on the key. This worked before, maybe it blew the bulb?
Also, my odometer had stopped some way back, but I bumped it back to service for a bit when testing, but then when cleaning up the engine bay after success it now doesn't work again (must have re-bumped something :-(
Thanks again to everyone, I should note that all the input and feedback was greatly appreciated. In the end this link was great in guiding through alternator removal (but I did NOT remove the heater core hose, just forced alt around it): https://crawlsbackward.blogspot.com/2017/03/saab-c900-alternator-removal.html
