Looks like you might be looking for instant feedback... Can't say I'm an expert, but here's my take:
If the shop claimed to see a massive oil leak, then didn't, maybe they overfilled it enough where it blew some out??
For sure get the oil level right and change it if it needs it.
Checking for sludge from the top seems far easier than via the oil pan, although if the screen is blocked you're only going to discover and fix it one way.
Ramps are best (along with e-brake and even wheel chocks), but I think you have to remove the sub frame to get at the oil pan.
I like doing jack stands at the forward jack points AND the floor jack at the front cross member. For sure NEVER use hydraulic jacks only as they can fail instantly at any time.
M1 0w40 is what I use for everything these days... Although choice of oil is one of those things like Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge. People are just NEVER going to EVER see eye to eye on the topic!
Finally, you've got an older car....If it becomes a problem for you, just dump it and get something else and get on with your life! I have 3 vehicles right now with various random issues that could become major and years ago I just said who cares? I drive them and if they break I can consider fixing them for the fun of it or just get something else. I figured no reason to lose any sleep over any of it.
