I almost got into management consulting. I turned down 2 offers. I didn't want to live in a hotel for years on end, and not have any real friends or relationships. I wan't in a frat in school, and had no intention of joining that environment when I got out.
So the Big 6 recruiters came to my school: Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. After round 3 of recruiting, after offers were made they put us all up at the Ritz (celebration for folks who accepted, 1 last ditch recruiting effort for the rest of us). Talking to the people indicdated they didn't bother with state schools, and they went to big ones in Chicago, CMU in Pittsburgh, and top east coast schools.
The issue is this, what companies come to your campus to recruit? What companies come to UC Berkeley?
All that being said, it won't matter in a year or 2. All that will matter is real world experience.
A B- engineering student at MIT will have a lot more opportunities than the A+ engineer from a state school. Regardless of class size, prof-student ratio, # of grad students teaching, etc. That's reality.
As an aside, my wife is going to apply for Berkeley Optometry in a year. I do record shopping and get my hair cut in Berkeley. Based on all the weirdos I see there (and I'm a flaming liberal, vegan, punk listening guy) I have a hard time seeing those kids in Coporate America. Maybe the responsible ones steer clear of Telegraph. :)
Best of luck.
Did you buy your round the world ticket yet? There is either STA or Council travel in Berkeley. Maybe both.
Randy
