(rambling)
I graduated last May from a school with a very good name (Duke), a respectable GPA (3.3), and some OK work and internship experience. I then backpacked around Europe for three months. I also applied for the Peace Corp (and turned down a assignment to Bangladesh- an extremely hard decision) and drove around the country (in the Saab of course) camping one summer (perhaps the best time of my life).
These things aren’t for everyone (though apparently they are for many Saab owners). Don’t not do them because of the desire to make money, or compete with your peers, or because you feel it is necessary for a career. But if they don’t appeal to you, then don’t feel obligated in any way.
As for finding a job, let me say that it is HARD. I would like to think I was a good candidate, but I had a VERY hard time finding a job. My biggest mistake was not thinking about it soon enough. You want a very good junior year internship and preferable something after sophomore year and during school as well. You need to apply to the good jobs and internships ludicrous early in the year. Be very assertive; write and call everyone, use the career center, and get contacts for other Davis grads- they will favor you over candidates from other schools. Basically Monster.com or whatever probably won’t cut it.
It sounds like you’re doing well- your involved, working hard, and have good experience. You just need to sell yourself hard, start applying now, and don’t get discouraged.
As for consulting, it is very much a “type-A personality” “master of the universe” type field. Some people love, some people people get burned out. You probably won’t get into a top consulting firm from Davis, but that’s fine and it doesn’t hurt to try. If you are interested in the field there are many companies that offer consultant-type positions that you may want to look into, I can probably recommend a few.
I know this is kind of rambling, but I wanted to share some thoughts since I was just in the same boat and I definitely feel your situations. It’s cool to seem a bunch of great posts on the matter. Feel free to shoot me an email with any questions or anything.
