Your post was very thoughtful as are some of the followups, I certainly wish you the best. As a near graduate this is one of the few times in your life you a truly free to make your own decision without a consideration to finances, life events, family and friends. I graduated in '89 and the economy didn't look good for me either and quite frankly I wasn't the student you have been. As a liberal arts student with a degree in history my an options were pretty limited but I looked into peace corp and catholic charities and ended up working one year with catholic charities in Mexico. Best decision of my life; It gave me a chance to get out on my very own, I made life long friends, gave me a perspective outside of the US that has served me well even after I returned. Whether you can work or travel; I would highly sugest cutting your own path for a year or two prior to getting into "the grind" of a regular job. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!
