Went through not 1, not 2, but 3 rear (behind flywheel) crank seals the first time I tried that job on a 900. Kept getting a little lip caught and bending it out once I tried using the seal smoosher-innerer. $60 later I finally used a modified ring compressor to get it in that first little bit. Not sure if this counts as a botch or (worse) a cob job, but despite what the bumpkin behind the counter said, an Audi 5000 head gasket is NOT the same as a 4000 gasket. The 5k gasket has a little notch cut out that cuts into the water jacket. After reassembling the top end and filling her up with coolant, I saw water pissing out the gap between the head and block that the PROPER gasket would have covered. I JB welded it and ~3 years later, still cool.
