and when you do, they are usually audiophile systems, priced into the thousands of dollars.

Yamaha does still make a high quality 2 channel amp with their patented "natural sound" processors. Yamaha has consistently given me the best bang for the buck. As another poster mentioned, you may have a tough time finding a 2 channel amp with a phono in, since phono inputs must be amplified (which is why you can't plug your CD player into the phono in.)

In terms of speakers, yes, Polk does make very good stuff (and they are mad ein Baltimore, MD). Again, Yamaha makes some amazing and affordable speakers. I also like Infinity's value on low end systems.

As far as the CD player, 5 disk changers are a dime-a-dozen. Again, Yamaha makes excellent CD players (can you tell that I'm a huge Yamaha fan?!).

Powered Subs: SPEND $ here! A good sub is worth every penny. I run a Boston Accoustic 10" amplified sub, and it truly completes the system. Most surround sound equipped receivers have a sub pre-out. Most powered subs are capable of using speaker line inputs though, which could be run off any amp's B channel (which does affect the sound quality of the A channel when both are on).

Stay away from Sony in all of this, unless it's Sony-ES models (which cost a whole lot more than their base stuff). It will be tough to do, since they offer an insane number of models and they are usually the cheapest or close to it.

Good luck,

Mike
