Alex,
Like I've said before...I am HT geek. I follow those sites religously. I'm building a new house and putting in a pretty sweet home theater system in the family room and speakers throughout the house.
A couple of things...
Have you ever heard/watched a DVD in surround sound? I love to watch serious actions flicks (Gladiator, The Patriot, Braveheart) in 5.1. Brings movies into a whole new atmosphere....
If you decide to go with 5.1, then you need to consider your budget. Build your system one piece at a time. Certainly with your budget, you can get a good 5.1 receiver and some kick-ass front speakers. Add in the center channel, surrounds, and subwoofer later as your budget allows.
I am a HUGE fan of HT. I hate to go to the movies anymore b/c I can watch the stuff in my own home and get better sound w/out the jokers sitting behind me.
Research this stuff and look around...go beyond Circuit City and Best Buy. Go to an audio-visual only store and just look around. You don't have to buy that big money stuff but it's give you an idea of what can be done.
Finally, Crutchfield is a great place to look for stuff and order stuff. Their return policy is great and they have good stuff there. Real HT snobs will stick up their nose at those names but they will suit you very well. That is where I got my start in HT a few years ago. I've moved onto companies that you have probably never heard of (Hsu Research, Paradigm, Def. Tech, NHT)...but good stuff.
Have fun with it!!!!
