With a $1500 2-channel budget, you should be considering higher quality components than this. my suggestions:
Amp: check out brands like NAD, Adcom, Rotel, Arcam. I use a 35 watt/ch NAD that can hit 200 watt into 2ohms for short bursts and drive speakers that will melt your average Onkyo. These guys do nice CD players too, although Onkyo and Denon CD players are good too. Example:

or
http://www.rotel.com/products/specs/ra02.htm
Sub: optional, depends on main speakers and room, but these kick serious butt:

or

main speakers: SO much variety!!! In your price range, try stand-mounted bookshelfs or floorstanders from Paradigm, Energy, NHT, Mirage, PSB, Axiom Audio, or Magnepan. Do google searches for websites. I use a pair of Energy C-1 bookshelf speakers that are quite nice at $299/pair:
http://www.energy-speakers.com/connoisseur/connoisseur_speakers1_c-1.html
or maybe at $420
http://www.axiomaudio.com/m40ti.html
or at $650
http://www.paradigm.ca/Website/SiteParadigmProduct/ParadigmModels/MonSeriesII/MonitorSpecs.htm
or totally different:
http://www.magnepan.com ("offer you can't resist" link)
audiogon.com is a great site for used gear if you know what to look for.
Audio gear depreciates faster than Saabs do. ;-)
Bring your CDs to your local hifi stores and start listening!! If you're near Boston I can recommend several.
Suggestion: NAD C740 receiver (400), Axiom m40 towers, Denon CD ~$250, plus a turntable. Or NHT SB1 (http://www.nhthifi.com/2004/products/product_detail.asp?ProductLineID=2&ProductID=11) plus a Hsu sub for something more compact.
