What TT do you have in mind? I've been through a few TT's in the past 10 years, and now I'm on a pretty high end setup. The first entry into the high end (on a budget) was an AR ES-1. You could probably get a nice one for under $200. It's belt drive and does a pretty darn good job. Put a good decent cartridge on it and you're in business.
Also look at Rega Planar 2 or Planar 3, or Sumiko Pro-ject series 'tables.
As for cartridges: look into Sumiko Blue Point, a Grado, or the Audio-Technica 440ML. Here's the deal with cartridge and receiver compatiblity... Unless it specifically states it works for low output MC's, you're probably only going to get the gain for a MM cartridge. Figure a typical rcvr can handle a 3.0mV + output cart.
For all things TT related, see http://www.needledoctor.com
For actually buying any gear, I start at http://www.audiogon.com
You can ask some details at http://www.audioasylum.com
As for gear, you can maximize your value buying used. A lot of the mid-grade / high end gear is bulletproof. A possible bump up from NAD is Adcom or Rotel. Look at audiogon.
Speakers are a total crapshoot. I've been through 5 pairs of Legacy's, and use a set of small 2 way's in my bedroom. They're quite nice. Try paradigms, or PSB's for your mains, too. The best bet is to listen to them at shops. Bring music you know well, and take your time. Best Buy and Circuit city will not provide good demo enviornments.
As for subs, I believe you need horns, or at least some 15's or 18's to do a good job. I had 4 12's at they didn't cut it (for my taste). Unless you need killer bass, spend your $$$ on a good rcvr and source gear, and some 2 or 3 way speakers.
Don't get suckered in to expensive wires. Radio Shack gold series wires a great. I've actually done a comparison of a $10 power cord to a $1600 power cord at someone's house. Yes, there is a slight difference, but I don't think I'd spend $1600 for 6 feet of copper wire even if I had $100million in the bank. That's obscene.
