I had a high end surround system but I couldn't stand it. It called attention to itself way too often and I found it fatiguing.
I ended up connecting a Goldmund preamp and amplifier to my video system with 2 high end Revel reference monitors. What you get is a more believable soundstage, BETTER dynamics, and a more enjoyable experience.
*Note that the fact that it's a Goldmund helps quite a bit. I tried using my Linn setup which is also high end but it didn't deliver the imaging and dynamics of the Goldmund. The benefit of the Linn is that it has a remote.
*Also note that if you go the two channel route, you'd better have a DVD player that has good decoders in it. My Panasonic DVD doesn't sound good but the Marantz one does. The Marantz was 4 times the price however.
