i bought my first house twice. yes, twice. i rescinded my offer after the inspection turned up unanswerable questions. we looked at 15 MORE houses before we came back to the house we put our first bid on. we got it for 20k less than asking price and 8k less than our original bid (which was accepted).

if it doesn't happen, it's not meant to be and there is no looking back. take your time. but, if you happen to be able to purchase this house that you do like, then *that* is what was meant to be.

we started to get tired and depressed after the 30th or so house. all of the previous houses started to blend together. we started to compare every house to the one we put the bid on, etc... but, we wound up back at the original house (because the owners had searched us out and were willing to come down). so... it was meant to happen, then it wasn't meant to happen and then in the end, it was meant to happen. it was my dream house, you know, the type of house where when you walked in for the first time, you knew it was "home". if you had that feeling when you walked in (and the basics were in shape, roof, foundation, plumbing, heating, etc..) go for it. who knows, you could look at 30 houses and like this one the best.

i found that searching for a house meant relying a LOT on our gut feelings. your gut will make the right decision in the end. expect the unexpected, but don't get deterred by it.

be patient, but don't sleep... does that make sense? :)
