Assuming you find the right inspector. Maybe I'm biased because I used to be a Civil Engineer myself, and know a thing or two about house construction, but the majority of inspections are simply means to brow-beat the seller and get stuff for nothing...
So far, I've sold two houses and built four, and I have yet to meet an inspector who knows what they're doing. They find a few 'obvious' things, and that's the end of it. If there's anything major (such as, in a snow state, do not buy a house with a cute roof line that no matter how well roofed, will attract ice dams since noone knows how to roof a house or noone is willing to pay for a good job)... You get the drift.
Then there's the problem de jour. In my days it was siding, and we all went thru the class action lawsuit deals (good deal if you file early, tough luck if you file late :-)). Now it's mold. Next month it will be windows, etc.
