Go ahead and do that kicking. :) I recently turned down a couple of job offers in DC and Boston. We wanted to move, acutally, but the deciding factor was that the NC job was the best one for my career. (With COL, it was approx the highest salary too.)
Prices: about $110/sq ft where I'm looking, but possibly under $100 some parts of town and up to $150/sq for the 'lux home. In general, real estate is very reasonable in Durham and Raleigh but steep for the southeast in Chapel Hill. But Chapel Hill gets you the awesome school system and some other ammenities (e.g., very low crime).
For a 3BR/2BA house in Durham for 1600+ sq ft, we've been looking $150-190k range with ease. Naturally, the more expensive homes have nicer stuff, like garages and wood floors.
