With two kids who just graduated college, I know how much easier it was for the youngest to get service on his laptop while on campus. He bought his through the school at a super sweet discount and got warranty for all four years too. He broke part of the case of his IBM laptop during his Junior year and the on-campus computer center replaced the broken part while he waited! At no cost!
The oldest one bought his machine at a store close to home. Every time it hiccupped (and they all will) he had to limp along until he could bring it home during a long break for repair.
I wouldn't spend money on a port replicator. Dorm desks are so small you won't want anything else on the desk when the computer is put away and you are doing reading or some other study task. A good optical mouse is mandatory - wiggle sticks and touch pads suck for extended use!
Enjoy your college years. Many people discover later that they were the best 4 years of their life.
