Because of limited desk space in Dorm rooms I would also advice against buying separate speakers. Instead, I heartily endorse buying a Bose Wave Radio, or similar item from another manufacturer.

You can plug the sound card outputs of the laptop into the aux inputs of the radio and you have significantly better sound than the laptop speakers provide. Likewise you can plug your walk-man or disc-man into these ports for room filling stereo sound. It also serves as your clock and a quality sounding radio.

The biggest plus is the small size and large sound relative to all the pieces it replaces. No, I don't work for Bose and I don't much care for most of their products. But their Wave Radio is great for Dorm rooms.
