Do not attempt to buy a laptop that will have a 4-year life. It's too expensive to buy technology today that's designed to be used tomorrow and laptops just don't have enough expansion capabilities to do this well.
Assume that this computer will get you through the first two or three years of school. Get a replacement computer to get you through the last year of school and the first year of your professional life.
This strategy is what our students are doing more and more. To be fair, Drexel is a 5-year school because of the co-operative education model (there are three 6-month employment periods in the academic schedule) and it's pretty much impossible to get a notebook that will still be capable of running current software 5 years from its purchase.
