I subscribe to both Stereophile and Stereophile's Guide to Home Theater, and regularly dream of being able to do a nice system for myself. On the subject of insulating your component cabinet; my personal chop is that it would be a good idea to insulate the box well, and that the question of forced ventilation is probably at least as, if not more so, important than the insulation. BTW, you can get relatively inexpensive pink styrofoam-like insulating panels at Home Depot for a song and a dance. Believe they have an R-rating of 3.0, and are around 1/2 inch thick - should be very easy to work with. On the ventilation front, you may want to consider putting some sort of "check valve" into the airflow path, so as to prevent back-flow from the unfinished portion of your basement when the ventilators aren't running. Enjoy.
