I just picked up a set of magneplaner MC1s. They hang on the wall and are only 1 1/4 inch deep. Our living room walls are basically tan (my wife has a fancier name for it) and we got the taupe speakers. They almost disappear.
If you don't mind adding a subwoofer, it's a nice way to get very good sound that's not "in your face" visually, or sonicly. My wife is as happy as I am. They're not as good as a $4000 Revel but I could deal with these as my main system if I had to. I think the Maggies cost about $700. Figure another $200-$1200 for a subwoofer depending on your budget and size constraints.
ps. Forced ventelation requires a fan. A fan can induce more unwanted electrical noise into your homes wiring which will find its way into your electronics and hurt your sound; especially digital sources. If you go this route, check out the power isolation from PS-Audio. Plan to spend some money.
