The soul of the machine....

I have always marveled at the build quality and reliability of Japanese cars, even as I have found them bland drivers, not very comfortable, or both. Maybe when you make cars into appliances the soul is unavoidably lost. American cars also lack spirit. They are smooth, quiet and can be indifferent to maintenance, what a lot of people like.
But what makes a car have soul, or spirit? What makes a car fun to drive?
These are very subjective areas.
Would we drive Saabs if they felt like a Camry?
What gives a Saab (or BMW or MB for that matter) it's spirit?
Can you build a Saab, retain all that we love, and have it be as reliable as a Japanese car?
