and electrons work the same everywhere, but it's what you do with them and them how you integrate them into a product. The Japanese seem to be more innovative and probably compulsive in this regard. Or if not, the companies are not as driven by the bean counters as Ford and GM.
The U.S. mentality seems to be that if making something for 10 cents less means it will fail once while the first owner has the car that's OK. The Japanese logic is pay 10 cents more so it doesn't fail or fails in only a very small percentage of cars. (Or simply design it to be more reliable.) Then the customer is happier and the overall perception of reliability is much higher. When you multiply this times lots of parts you get a product that is reliable--or one that is not.
I've never owned a Japanese car, but they are better made and more reliable than domestics. IMHO, anyway. Still don't want one.
