In practice sure - statistically Japanese cars have fewer mechanical problems. What leads to that though? Is the apparent "cheapness" of american cars traceable to the fact that they are all publicly held companies which wish to maximize profits? I still say "technical innovation" or "the relentless pursuit of perfection" is just "We're adding 10K to the price and need to justify it somehow...".
