It's interesting that you mentioned the Ford Focus, which was developed by Ford of Europe, and when I left Germany 2 years ago, was rated as the most reliable car in Germany. The interesting part is that the Focus is considered a domestic car in Germany and a domestic car in Britain. European companies are driven by similar profit margins as in the US; however, European speed limits are higher, driver licensing requirements are tougher, and inspection requirements are strictor than those in the US. So the cars are built that way. It is interesting to see the increased emphasis on safety in the US, Europe and Japan.
