Well torque is equivalent to the amount of force available to turn the wheels. The force available is directly proportional to the acceleration, ie the "next snapping" factor of a car, BUT inversely proportional to mass. I'd suggest if you really want to appraise
a car without driving it you divide torque curves of different cars by their respective masses. If you do this with 3 roughly comparable cars, The A4 (3.0) , 9-3SS (Aero), Volvo S40 (T5), BMW 330i, and Honda S2000 you see,
{model, max torque, mass, torque/mass}
{audi, 221, 3737, 0.59}
{saab, 221, 3175, 0.69}
{volvo, 236, 3069, 0.77}
{330i, 214, 3285, 0.65}
{S2000, 162, 2835, 0.57}
What does this tell you? Well, as a rough estimate, the Volvo has the greatest potenbtial for neck-snapping acceleration and the Honda and Audi will be dogs. Is this true in real life? I don't know as I've driven none of these cars. Seeing though that the Volvo's estimated invoice price is 5k less than the saab though makes quite a persuasive case. I wonder if the wagon is similarly cheaper?
