Though my personal preference is a BMW inline six, just because they're so damn smooth, Honda seems in many ways to be leading the pack... at least in the realm of 4 cylinder engines...
Of course the car rumor sites say Honda's moving away from S2000s and NSXs and the like and focusing more on family friendly rides -- which I suppose could mean less of those rev happy highest production car redline, highest production car specific output type of engines that Honda seems to spring on us all the time. I'm sure one of Honda's 2.4 Liter Accord or CRV engines is still nice, but not the kind of thing that sets an enthusiast's heart aflame.
And BMW's new sixes sound pretty sweet (not driven one yet) with the magnesium block (or block components) and double vanos, etc.
