More Katrina... On CNN this morning

Soledad O'Brien interviewed the head of FEMA and asked him point blank why the aid didn't start immediately. He waffled.
She pointed out that last December there were US helicopters dropping food and water to people in Thailand within two days of the tsunami, yet in New Orleans aid in any real measure has yet to arrive. And it's not like the storm was a surprise, like the tsunami. They had days to prepare for some significant level of damage on the Gulf.
And the director of FEMA waffled.
She said news crews from all over have been able to get into the area in advance and have been there. Some still arrive. So why, she asked, can't thhe military get in and help?
And the director of FEMA waffled.
With all the military bases in the south and why wasn't something done sooner, at least with respect to getting in choppers and at least minimal reflief and support.
Are our military and disaster support services really stretched that thin?
