if they make it far enough to be able to do something to make it farther... perhaps appealing to the car buyers that don't want the generic white can of beer from years ago, and yes, narrow significately the models. Two body styles, two engine choices, two transmission choices and that is all. Make them the *same* inside, more like the latter years of the 900S and the 900T, and the *same* outside. Same wheels, tires etc. If the guy buying the hot rod turbo wants other wheels or tires that can be either 1) a dealer upgrade or 2) the guy can do it himself later. Very little differences then, make them the *same* now. Turbo or not, stick or the new style autobox, and I always wanted to put the 2.3T in the c900 body.. so why not do something like that, turbo or not. Hatch or the trunk four door, and that's it.
Appeal to those wanting to stand apart from the white, blue or red econo boxes, those liking the performance, utility (hatch!), safety, and *value*. Yes make these cars more price competitive right from the start. No promos, no coupons, rebates, employee discounts, brother in law discounts, or your sister's husbands father's next door neighbor's uncle's accountants's hair dresser's doctor's painter's body shop guy knows someone. Throw the glove down and price the base car model to take market share right from the start. The other model is more of course, but you get the safety, uniqueness, and utility in *either* model. It's the performance you pay for, and if you want it you will pay for it.
but the ad campaign must do a better job of selling the car, get some cool spokes person, sell green, sell safety, sell economy, sell being different than the masses, sell standing out from the crowd, DO NOT sell it as being quirky or dorky or the historical bit of having the key on the floor was "odd". If the key stays on the floor, SELL IT as an advantage, and "gee, we don't know why the others don't do this..."
