around, at least here in New England.
First dealer I worked at was VW-Porsche-Audi-Mercedes. The next was Porsche-Audi-Mercedes-Honda. Then when I went to work for VWoA they had a push on to get rid of the duals (or triples in a few cases). VW sales were down and it was a tough argument for VW to make, when the dealers were also selling Hondas, Mazdas, and Subarus. Insisting on solo stores hurt VW, at least here in New England. But this was late '70s early '80s.
Now dealers get around it with owning multiple stores, but if the industry contracts--which seems likely--duals may come back. The economy of scale a dual enjoys makes a lot of sense for lower volume makes or if overall sales are down. I understand the competitive issues, but it seems like having marques that don't compete directly under one roof makes a lot of sense for dealerships in tough times.
