The closest good Saab service now is 7 hours away. I DIY or nothing.
I can buy parts at the local GM dealer. I can pay $600 for a radiator ($200 at eeuroparts) or $600 for a neutral switch ($280 at eeuroparts) or five dollars for a copper O-ring (99 cents at eeuroparts). All parts at the dealer are one week wait, same as eeuroparts to Canada.
I can get warranty service at the GM dealer. They can install the wrong battery under warranty and give me the battery cover in the trunk because it won't fit any more. Fortunately it only lasted 26 months then I could get the RIGHT battery at the local auto parts store and reinstall the battery cover.
I can get service at the GM dealer. I can take the car in for an alignment (this is the GM dealer next door to the old Saab dealer, where the Saab dealer sent their alignment work), give them the shims so that we don't have to wait for them. At the end of the day, get charged $150 and get told that they couldn't install the shims because they couldn't get it apart. I installed the shims in the driveway then took the car to a frame/alignment shop for a four wheel alignment for $70.
Yes, they'll pick me up, drop me off, and give me a coffee and donut. I'd rather take the bus, pick up donut and hot chocolate at Tim Hortons, and get the job done correctly.
Wish I had access to a good dealer or indy for those jobs that are too difficult or specialized for me to DIY.
John, people aren't cranky about you or your dealer I'm guessing. It's just that you appear to be the exception to the rule.
