I've been going to a dealer because I have 'free' service on my 2008. They have generally demonstrated competence (although there was one comment like "that noise is normal" and when I pointed out that I had the first XWD they had seen, so they really didn't know what was "normal") and far better than dealers in the 1980s when I had my first Saab.
Before this dealer I went to an indy because (a) old dealers were incompetent and (b) I still have a 1988 900 T and it's good to have a guy who has a bunch of recyclable transmission parts in a box.
I will say that the hours during which I can pick up the car and the ease in getting an appointment are about the same. The dealer's a closer walk to the train, to get to work, but that's not a cost factor. What will I do for my 2008 when the free service runs out? I'll probably get quotes and decide.
