Tire condition and snow driving

I took my 9-3 convertible to test the winter drive way condition of a property that I'm interested in buying mid-day today (New Year's Eve). It's located about 25 miles west of downtown Boston, and we got about 12-15" of snow in the post-Christmas snow storm. The property was entirely unplowed because nobody is living there, although there were two sets of SUV/truck tread marks in the 300ft+ circular drive way. I simply followed the tracks laid down by the SUV/trucks, probably scraping the snow in the middle the entire way. The car never had difficulty with traction, and braking was very responsive without much slip. I even intentionally drove outside the existing tracks laid in the snow, and the car had no difficulty handling that either. There hadn't been much melting in the area yet, as the deep woods kept direct sunlight out, so almost the entire original 12-15" were there, minus whatever the trees could keep from landing on the ground. My guess is probably 10" snow on the ground where untouched by vehicles, with 3-4" of compacted snow where there are vehicle tread marks.
The real kicker is that, my '99 9-3 convertible is only shod with all season tires, General Altimax HP, new since this past July when I bought the car. The car doesn't even have traction control. Contrast that with the fact that I almost got rid of my '01 9-5 wagon in the third winter of ownership 7 years ago because the half-worn OEM Michelen tires was getting us stranded in similar snow conditions (hence the purchase of an SUV a few months later) . . . two very similar cars with the wagon having over 1" more ground clearance than the convertible, and having traction control . . . tire condition (tread depth) is indeed of paramount importance (assuming we are talking about reasonably snow-capable all seasons) . . . also perhaps the advantage of 15" tires with relatively narrow 195/60 profile.
The Saab cars are indeed quite snow capable, even without AWD.
