that's interesting... do you have a link to the study? would be cool to see what they did...
one thing that I would be interested in is the wear rate of studded tires vs friction tires and also how the newer stud designs compare in that regard to the older ones... eg how long does each take to get to 50%?
A number of years ago, I got to compare back to back (on similar c900s) 10 year old studded Nokia Hakka 10's with (at that time) virtually brand new (<3000km) unstudded Hakka 4's... the difference was huge on ice - the old studded tires were massively better on ice + comparable on snow (and loud loud loud on dry roads!)... the studs were worn down vs new, but they still left little "bullet holes" in the ice... performance in snow + ice was unbelievably similar to driving on bare roads (eg there is no way it would have been stuck on that hill in the video)... in the end, the tires were tossed for age, not performance loss (at maybe about 30k km I would guess)...
One of my observations was that the hakka 10's had lots of tread left. I didn't measure, but visually, there was a lot + must have been a good amount to get the continued awesome deep snow/slush performance... my hypothesis was that those old style studs in some way took some load off the rubber + reduced tire wear... this may be incorrect (or the fraction of load carried insignificant), but I was surprised just how well they worked after almost 10 seasons (not high km/season though) vs unstudded only seem to go a few seasons for me (+ brand new didn't even seem to match up for grip on ice)...
If my suspicion wrt studded tire wear rates is correct, I wonder if the effect is less pronounced in tires with the newer spring loaded studs?
my parents recently got studded hakka 5's for their 9-5 so it will be interesting to see how they hold up in the long term...
James...
