A few of the dealers stayed open... KW, London, Budds... no new cars, but they were selling used Saabs throughout... The used ones that are well priced sell quickly... others sit... I haven't checked for sure, but has leasing come back here yet? if not, that would be a reason for low sales...
One minor issue with some of the Canadian dealers is they've had to retrench so significantly, that it will take some work to regain a "premium" presence that attracts buyers from the big Audi/BMW dealerships. Our local one consolidated 3 buildings worth of Saab/Saturn Pontiac/Buick/GMC into 1 smaller location, a bit off the beaten track, away from the autopark. They sold used cars (and no Saabs really for a while) until recently picking up Saab/Suzuki. It's been a tough fight for those guys I think!
in terms of the ads... my favourite was "My other Saab's a car"... the right/left brain c900 ad was pretty good too... Saab vs Reindeer was fantastic... I think the Nicht German and others they've been running have been pretty good. Safety is important + should be highlighted... but, I think that line on it's own is wearing thin. Everyone uses it these days (eg that Subaru ad), regardless of whether the cars really are safer... I think the majority of buyers think a Kia with a highly advertised 5 star rating (in 1 test) is just as good. If you listened to a Ford ad, there is no safer car on the road than a Ford. I have people telling me how a Nissan Versa or Honda Civic is so safe... hdli numbers don't support those statements, but the average buyer doesn't care... they tune out... does it look nice? cupholders? great price? awd? mpg? 5 star safety? "features"? appealing to smarter people isn't a bad idea... subtlety + artistry then is more important... the Subaru ad? meh... I'm sure I've seen a Camry advertised like that in the past... doesn't make me want to buy one...
James...
