Instead of not discounting, or discounting too much, or owner loyalty, perhaps Saab should consider offering to BUY old Saabs as trade-in's at substantially above-current-market prices, then either part them out or crush them. It's like a stock buy-back plan to bouy the price. Used Saab prices will instantly go up, as people will be buying them to get in-effective discounts on new Saabs. The really crummy specimens that went through three owners in three years will get crushed and removed from the market. Voila, both the resale value and quality perception will be up. Don't impose any ownership duration requirement, so anyone shopping between a $40k Audi vs. a $40k Saab can go buy a $1000 old Saab and trade in on a new Saab for a $6k credit, effectively saving $5000 over the Audi. The result will be the gradual removal of all old tramps priced below $4-5k or so; people would have a very strong determination to keep old Saabs; i.e. people keeping them for the love of cars instead of for the low purchase price (who also often can't afford to keep them in top shape). With a final manufacturer's Put standing out there like that, Saab resale value will go up significantly very quickly.
