The combination of only two models really available, the new 9-5 being relatively expensive, public perception that the company is dead, and limited marketing activity is a formula for trouble. The other points people raise above--about steep depreciation and a history of deep new-car discounts--make matters worse.
I don't buy new cars anyway, but even if I did the new 9-5 wouldn't be on the short list because I just don't require a big sedan any longer. The wagon is probably fine, as is the 9-4, but to me neither is worth the cost delta over buying a used 9-5 wagon or 9-3SC. So at the end of the day, Saab isn't making new cars that I want. And judging from numerous other posts on this board, plenty of other Saab guys feel the same way. My next Saab is likely to be a used 9-3SS/SC or a 9-5 sedan/wagon.
IMHO, Saab still needs to decide what it wants to be. As much as it apparently wants to, it's not going to compete successfully with Mercedes, Audi, and BMW. Real world, it's competition is VW, Subaru, Mazda and maybe even Hyundai. Those makes are all a bit different than Toyotas and Hondas (and domestics), which are bland because they are designed to appeal to as many people as possible. Saab needs to flaunt its individuality, even on existing models like the 9-3SS/SC,and get people into showrooms. Get people to drive the cars. Adjust pricing as needed. Be aggressive and move the iron. Put cars in rental fleets so more people get exposed to Saabs. But do something, or the brand really will go away!
