High gas prices, friend or foe?

Obviously no one likes high prices, and when people spend more on gas they have less to spend on other things which certainly isn't a good thing for the economy. And yet you'd have to be pretty oblivious to not realize that gas/energy costs and availability is going to be an area of constantly diminishing returns, an incessent thorne in the side that's a very real threat to almost all aspects of life as we know it. The higher gas prices go now, the more serious people will get about conserving, they'll be incentive to develope technology and business models predicated on energy conservation and the better we'll be prepared for the future. The cheaper gas is now, the less we'll conserve and the more pain we're likely to experience later. There have been discusions over the years of putting a federal tax on gasoline and then reducing federal income taxes by a comparible amount, as an example. And maybe it's a moot point because it's entirely possible gas prices are going to go way up in the next couple of year no matter what. I guess the question is are high gas prices actually a blessing in discise?
