Through some tortured rationalization, some may argue that losing a limb helps building character.

Saving gas? For what? I can understand the point in saving money by saving gas, so that money (tokens of economic opportunity) can be redirected towards something else . . . but saving gas for the sake of saving gas? Some day, pumping oil from the ground will indeed slow down if not cease, but that won't be due to oil becoming too scarce but due to even cheaper source of energy being found . . . just as gasoline and diesel being cheaper alternatives to alcohol and peanut oil because gasoline was the throw-away byproduct for the production of kerosine lamp oil, which in turn was a cheaper alternative to whale oil, which was in turn a cheaper alternative to vegetable oil for lighting at night.

Human progress is measured by less expensive alternatives being found, so that we can have previously budgeted resources redirected towards new adventures enhancing human satisfaction in additional new ways. Society has to be organized around serving human beings, not serving some mythical gasoline god or misguided ideas of conservation / central planning at cost to human living standards.

The current oil and gasoline price increase is due to man-made monetary fiasco. Gold and rare art collections are going up in prices even faster than oil and gasoline. Gold has very little industrial, and rare art collections have even less; they are almost pure mirrors of monetary malfeasance by the fiat money authorities.
