I do believe that oil companies are purposefully jacking up the prices. There's no doubt about it when their profits are up 75% from last year. I think they're doing it though, because they see that it's the begining of their end. Hybrdids are already taking over, and it's only a matter of time before oil becomes obsolete. Now with cars like the Nissan Leaf, more and more companies are going to come out with low maintanence Electrics, and oil demand will drop exponentially. By raising prices now, oil companies are making as much profit as they can while demand is still high.
If the U.S. was smart and wanted to keep their number 1 spot on the world econonmy, they would have jumped on this a lot faster. We began car domination with efficiency, and if we started focusing on it again, we'd stop with all the SUVs and straight out inefficient cars. Even during the cash for clunkers promotion, the most common U.S. car bought was a Ford Focus, 24mpg....
To be honest though, I don't like change, as most. I love my Saab and don't want to another car, even if someone gave me a brand new Prius. So gas is bankrupting me right now, going to 3 different colleges, and traveling a lot for work, I wish I didn't have to go through this huge power struggle that I'm powerless to stop.
