a couple things I've noted through this thread...

that there might be more hydrogen + carbon on the planet to burn than oxygen to oxidize it doesn't mean there is enough available in a (chemical) form that is useful and/or cost effective to use. Aside from other characteristics already discussed, gasoline has a pretty good energy density for transportation use (wood powered steam car anyone ;-)...

So oil's a pretty convenient form of hydrogen + carbon... I'm not sure the level of discovery these days vs historic values, but finding oil is more founded in science now than it was 100 years ago + geologists can probably make better estimations re what is reasonably accessible/cost effective going forward... if the finds these days are smaller or less economically viable, there may be a series convergence to some number other than infinity ;-)... at least in practical terms...

that said, in general, I agree with some other comments you've made in this thread: we aren't too likely to run out of oil... why? we'll just stop drilling for it when it gets too expensive + other energy sources become relatively less expensive (and are made practical instead of fringe)... that may come as a result of spiraling oil prices passing other fixed expense options, or it may come as a decrease in cost of other technologies (probably both)...

as noted earlier, energy density is the most important factor... in reality, the energy we use comes from the sun one way or another... it's the collection + storage technology that we need to sort out (whether it is a chemical process, nuclear, solid state, whatever)... all that matters is suitable energy density to move vehicle from A to B with some performance spec... burning old plant + animal carcasses from eons ago is kinda old fashioned, but it works (for now)... to answer no snaab's "question", I don't think higher gas prices are a huge foe in the long term as it stimulates new (and hopefully better) technology + industry...
