We will continue to use gas as long as it is the most economical option. When it is not, then we will switch. We can wait for the switch to happen by simply letting the cost continue to rise given the increase in demand that will undoubtedly continue. Or we can artificially inflate the price of using gas through taxes ( as they do in Europe) or through luxury tax on guzzlers (as indicated in prev post).
In my opinion the gov should act to decrease our use of foreign oil by one of the above and/or by continueing to drastically increasing cafe standards. Forty years after the oil embargo and we are driving around in low mpg behemoth suvs. To me that shows a total lack of political leadership and an unwillingness of the American people to even modestly make any sacrifices. We are in no better position re energy now than we were in 1973...pretty pathetic.
