It's a multi-faceted issue. Partially buyers but also GM. Lack of investment in the cars made it difficult for me to justify a newer one. In my case, my '03 9-5 Aero wagon is really no different from the '09 Aero wagon. Basically the same car, I didn't love the new styling and found the interior quality had gone down. I didn't want to upgrade as a result. Had GM invested in a more significant overhaul, I would have replaced it in '08 or '09. Look at BMW or Honda who overhaul their cars every 4 years or so.
Saab owners are very loyal to the older cars.(I have a 900TC and a 9000 Aero, both bought recently and love them both too). Keeping the old cars running keeps Saab Parts afloat, but not Saab Automobile. I'm sure there were lots of older Saab owners that never bought a new one. I DID buy three new Saabs from '99 through today (got the Saab bug later than some), and have an insane desire to pick up one of the last 9-3X's...rarer than the NG 9-5 and hopefully better parts availability (outside of bumpers, wheels, etc).
I also don't know how much revenue comes in from leased cars. Most Saab owners I knew who drove new cars leased them for 3 yrs/36K miles. I was the one buying, and taking the huge depreciation hit!
I had several Peugeots years ago, and the Peugeot community was just like the Saab community. "The 505 is the best Peugeot ever and I'd never buy a 407 or 508 or newer Euro one as they aren't as good..." Subjective, and most likely not really true. The newer cars are better built, safer, etc.
I was waiting for the 9-5SC to replace my existing wagon. Now, with its recently refurbed bumpers and new front lip spoiler, my mint condition 45K mile Cosmic Blue 9-5 Aero wagon will no longer be my daily driver (for obvious reasons), but I will keep it as long as I can.
Just my $0.02 on this Christmas Day.
Merry Christmas to all Saab owners/lovers out there!
