If you live in the west, the thin dealer network has to be an issue. Your heater control valve goes out in the middle of Utah and you have a BIG tow bill. Ours went out 25 miles from the dealer, lost coolant rapidly and the combined tow bill and repair was almost $500. After that we didn't trust the car enough to take on long trips. Had another problem that required towing; I don't remember exactly what it was.
GM could have done a lot better by mating the car with another brand; dealers often used to carry 2 brands--I remember Chevy dealers often carried Geo. They could have mated Saab with Oldmobile or Pontiac, trained one or more mechanics per dealership, kept routine parts onhand and shipped less commonly needed parts FedEx overnight. Shipping parts fast is not difficult these days, I can get almost any part I need for my John Deere tractor in 24 hours if it isn't in stock at the dealer.
A little imagination could have gone a long way toward marketing the brand. GM just didn't do it. They bought it and then didn't know how to sell it. We get passengers in the car and even though it's 9 years old, they say, "This is a really nice car. What is it?"
