and GM from Ford. Volvo stuck with RWD for as long as they could, but when they realized it was hurting sales they changed. In fact the 850 was an almost carbon copy of the Saab 9000 which I'm assuming Volvo must have considered state of the art (and was). When the market start going toward AWD Volvo came out with the Xcountry which continues to be popular and was ahead of the curve in the crossover segment. And when they realized they needed a genuine sport-ute too they made one that was still a Volvo. Saab has certainly remained true to it's roots but unfortunately the market has changed--even Honda makes a pickup truck of all things. Bucking the trend has proven to be a pretty lonely road for Saab.
