AMC, good 'ol American Motors also had similar problems. They stuck with older designs and tried to update them...the Hornet and the Eagle were similar, etc. The Rambler continued for years.
Lack of new platforms--as much as some liked their platforms, they were dated and old, and a lack of development monies hastened their demise.
I guess for the price they were good economy cars--the economy car experts...right?!
